Questions keeping me awake tonight... PS3 vs Wii

Hello friends,

It's 1:30 am here in Toronto and, surprise! I'm not sleeping. So, one of the sillier things that was bumbling around my mind was regarding the upcoming battle between PS3 and Nintendo Wii (pronounced wee) for the best Christmas sales. Apparently if you haven't already pre-ordered a PS3 you might not be able to get one before Christmas (thus making it even more desirable). I'm not sure I heard that about the Wii, but I wouldnt be surprised.

I did, however notice a few startling differences between the two big new console game release: The price of the PS3 is almost twice as much (maybe more) as the Wii. While they both have hand held wireless remote controllers, PS3's don't appear to have changed much, at least style-wise, whereas Nintendo has taken a dramatic turn from the tradtional double handed gameset controller and the Wii will have one wireless remote shaped more like a tv remote (with different buttons) and a second remote (I haven't fully determined what that remote is for yet, but there is a cord coming from it, so I figured it was attached to the console.

I understand the reason for change: it helps us to grow and develop and expand our possibilites, and I was fully in support of the Wii when first I heard about it (I am now, and have always been, almost exclusively a Nintendo fan). However, I was watching a tv commerical recently and it had a happy-looking sort of IKEA family jumping around and swinging the controllers as if they were bats or something. Serioiusly diasppointing commercial. It almost made me want to buy the PS3 because of the next PS3 commercial I saw which showed the handset moving and causing a bunch of eggs to move along with it on its six axes.

Anyhoo, the marketplace will decide. I will probably stick with Nintendo because I generally prefer the games they have (plus, if I really want to play PS3, I will get my nephews to bring theirs over!).

Peace out peeps,

From what I understand, on paper at least, the power of the PS3 should blow away both the Wii and the XBox 360 by far. But I think the question is whether developers will be able to take advantage of all that computing capacity in shipped games. For myself, it all comes down to the games themselves: lacking in both time and patience, I tend to stick to the instant gratification of driving and 3D shooters, and the XBox and PC games have historically dominated those genres (with a few notable exceptions of course) whereas GameCube and PS2 games seem to cater to the young crystal meth crowd (Super Whatty Ball?? Katamari Damacy, can I get that deep-fried with a side of tzatziki?)

Worse, for anyone with hi-def (which, let's not kid ourselves, will be everyone very very soon) ... the question between 360's HD-DVD and PS3's Bluewave?? VHS or Betamax???

Good to know about the older games Monique! Thanks! Good luck with Lego StarWars... I can't help with that one, I haven't tried it yet, but I love my DS too!
