Greetings from snowy Toronto,
Sorry I've been slacking with the posts of late and only putting up videos, but they were good songs weren't they? Please forgive me, I've been distracted.
So, as I was reading through news headlines today, I found this:
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/sask_child_shot
This is a tragic incident. An eight year old girl was shot and killed by accident with a rifle by her fourteen year old brother in their home. Their parents and another brother were also home at the time. I'm sure they're all feeling all kinds of guilt right now.
I'm not going to rant too long or hard about this one. One of the things that first came to my mind when reading this story is that this is another death that our infamous gun registry would not have prevented. However, blaming the colossal waste of money and resources that is our nation's gun registry is not going to bring this little girl back to life.
My next point is directed specifically at NRA types who like to say that 'guns don't kill people, people kill people'. Yes, typically someone has to pull the trigger, but if the boy was moving a hammer or even an axe, his sister would still be alive.
My final (though not least important) point is that this did not make national front page news. The CBC's news landing page has lots of other tragic stuff on it (dozens dead in Baghdad bombings, 34 452 civilians killed in Iraq last year, Brazilian subway collapse); but that's my point (though not made very well =). There is so much tragedy happening in the world right now (and for so long) that the accidental shooting death of one little girl in a small town in Saskatchewan isn't important enough to make the front page of our nation's public broadcasting website.
I'm not suggesting that the producers or editors at CBC are necessarily doing a bad job: this story made the provincial page. I'm just commenting on the state of our world today. I know, you don't really need me to point it out to you, but every now and then it hits me hard and makes me a little more sad.
On that note, I leave you.
Drive safe peeps,
