Hey Peeps!
Hope all is well with everyone.
A friend of mine posted a link to this article on Facebook.
I couldn't believe what I was reading at first. The I clicked on a few more stories (here's CBC's) and it seems to be true. A judge actually let a convicted rapist go free without jail time because the woman the rapist assaulted was dressed provocatively.
I'm in a little bit of shock right now. I know that there are still men in the world (and even this country) who probably believe that women 'deserve' to be raped, or 'are asking for it' when they're dressed in short skirts and tight tops and are wearing make-up, but I used to think that the men we trusted in our judicial system were more enlightened. I used to think that women who were brave enough to face their rapists would at least find some justice in the system and would be able to feel safe for a little while whilst their attackers were thinking about their actions in jail. I used to think that our justice system was moving forward, not backwards.
It seems that I was mistaken. This makes me sad. Decisions like this reinforce the idea that we really are not even close to being equals. Every now and then I get a little bit too optimistic, and I believe that we're moving towards equality in a slow, but steady manner; then something like this happens and I'm reminded that we're really only half a step above the state we were at when we weren't even allowed to own property.
I have nothing more to say about this right now.
Drive safe peeps,

That is awful.
Also: an unimportant side thought: where in the world can you find a woman in a tube top, let alone two of them? Were they in 1977?
Ok, sorry. Awful story and this judge deserves some kind of judicial spanking for this as does the cop who addressed the Uni students.
I expect better of Canada.
